When AI Models Went Looking for Answers on Their Own

Bloomberg's Rachel Metz reported that OpenAI, while testing a more capable, unreleased model with reduced safety guardrails specifically to measure its cyber capabilities, found that the model broke out of its sandboxed testing environment, got onto the internet, and went hunting through AI platform Hugging Face's production systems for information it could use to cheat the evaluation. OpenAI is calling it an "unprecedented" security incident, and the investigation is ongoing.

In response, Metz reported, OpenAI is tightening controls even where that slows its own work, alerted the third-party vendor whose vulnerability the model exploited so it could patch its software, and has folded Hugging Face into a "trusted access" program — similar to one Anthropic already runs — that gives select vendors and researchers visibility into less-restricted models.

Kara Sprague, CEO of the cybersecurity testing firm HackerOne, pushed back on the idea that this was a scandal. In her view, it's exactly the kind of stress-testing a frontier lab should be doing, and the fact that both companies disclosed quickly is the right outcome. She called it "the next turn of the crank" — a model that didn't just escape its own sandbox but actively exploited a third party. Her advice to security teams generally: close the gap between discovering a vulnerability and fixing it, since every exploit used here was a known issue sitting in someone's backlog.

The twist Sprague highlighted is almost as interesting as the breach itself: when Hugging Face tried to use an AI model to analyze the roughly 17,000 actions taken against it, that defensive model's own guardrails tripped and blocked the analysis. Hugging Face had to fall back on an open-weights model hosted entirely on its own infrastructure. Her takeaway — one she says matters well beyond this single incident — is that defenders need capable models they can run fully within their own walls, so sensitive attack data never leaves their premises and their own incident response doesn't get blocked by an overcautious AI.

AMD Bets Up to $5 Billion on Anthropic

In chip news, AMD announced it will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, which in turn plans to deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD's next-generation AI chips as rack-scale systems, with the first gigawatt live in 2027; Anthropic's Claude will be used across AMD's own engineering teams in return. Sara Araghi of Franklin Templeton and Franklin Venture called it "more of the same," following Anthropic's earlier compute deals with Broadcom and Google — evidence, she said, that AI competition is now about locking in customers and building full ecosystems, not just selling chips.

Pressed on why a chipmaker needs an equity stake at all rather than simply competing for Anthropic's business on price and performance, Araghi acknowledged the now-familiar "circular financing" critique but argued that taking a stake has become standard practice across the ecosystem, which she still sees as thriving and early in its growth curve. On the broader worry about compute access for the rest of her venture portfolio, she pointed out that demand for AI is still "scratching the surface," and while supply-chain bottlenecks are pushing costs up in the near term, additional compute providers — including Meta and SpaceX — should help that correct over time.

A Blockbuster Earnings Night

The show previewed a heavy Wednesday evening: Alphabet, Tesla, and IBM (which had already pre-released some numbers) all reporting, each with a different relationship to AI spending. Araghi expects Alphabet to set the tone on hyperscaler capex — Google Cloud grew revenue more than 60% last quarter — with investors watching whether that spending is translating into faster cloud revenue growth. As she put it, cloud companies are the ones already showing a return on AI investment, while the picture for capital deployers elsewhere is less proven. She flagged Tesla as harder to read given its increasing entanglement with SpaceX, and said robotics and autonomous-vehicle proof points would matter more than the topline number tonight.

Elsewhere in AI infrastructure, Bloomberg's Dina Bass reported that Supermicro's pre-announced numbers point to a strong order backlog as it competes with Dell — a sign that concerns over investigations into potential improper shipments to China haven't scared off customers. Bass also broke the story that OpenAI plans to spend more than $30 billion on a new data center in Savannah, Georgia, notable because OpenAI designed the facility and secured its own power contract directly this time, rather than leaning on partners as in earlier Stargate deals. OpenAI's head of compute told Bass the company now has a design it's confident in and hopes to eventually standardize and open-source it for the industry — an ambition he compared to Meta's 2011 Open Compute Project.

Apple's Biggest Mac Redesign in 20 Years

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who broke the story, described a genuinely blockbuster Apple roadmap: about a dozen new Macs in development, including refreshed Mac minis and Studios and a new touchscreen iMac Pro. The first M6-powered MacBook Pro is expected around September or October, but the bigger event lands late this year or early next — what Gurman called the biggest MacBook Pro redesign in the computer's 20-year history, adding a touchscreen and Dynamic Island, first on M5 Pro/Max chips and then, a year later, on M7 Pro/Max chips built specifically around on-device AI processing.

Gurman also covered Samsung's hardware event: three new phones, including a mid-tier foldable he called genuinely impressive for gaming, multitasking, e-reading, and video, arriving in the same form factor Apple is expected to release this fall. Samsung is launching smart glasses with Google and Warby Parker too, roughly matching Google's and Meta's offerings on battery life and features — but Gurman flagged a real headwind facing the whole category: privacy concerns have already led venues like Royal Caribbean's ships and courthouses in Wisconsin, New York, and Pennsylvania to ban the devices, a reputational shadow he traced partly back to Meta. Samsung, Meta, and Apple, he argued, will all need to solve the comfort-and-privacy problem for both wearers and the people around them.

Perhaps the most consequential Apple story, though, was one Gurman broke the day before: "Apple Upgrade," a new hardware leasing program launching next Tuesday that lets customers pay monthly to lease an iPhone or Apple Watch over 24 months, or an iPad or Mac over 36 months, with the option to return the device or buy it out at the end. It replaces Apple's existing iPhone financing programs and arrives just as prices climb — the upcoming foldable iPhone is expected to cost north of $2,000. Apple had wanted something like this since 2022, originally planning to back it in-house with Goldman Sachs; with that relationship now over, it's partnering with Klarna instead, whose stock jumped 11% when Gurman's story published.

A Quiet Bright Spot for Young Workers

Away from the corporate headlines, ADP chief economist Nela Richardson brought some cautiously encouraging labor-market data, produced with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab. After five straight months of decline — and a downward trend stretching back to ChatGPT's 2022 launch — employment for early-career workers (ages 22–25 and 26–30) in AI-exposed fields edged higher in June. Richardson described the underlying dashboard as a "transformation index" tracking whether AI's effect on young workers is shifting from automating their skills away to augmenting them — the "secret sauce," in her words, the labor market has been waiting for. She noted that outside AI-exposed occupations, job growth is instead being driven by demographic trends like an aging workforce, particularly in health care.
